Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

name change

The divorce papers say I have to change my name back to my maiden name. Can I change it any name as long as I change it? Also, does it cost to do this? And if I have to change it to my maiden name, can I change again anytime?

Re: name change

I have never heard of a divorce decree stating what your last name must be. Normally, it will simply grant the wife's request to revert back to her maiden name. Have a local attorney review the decree because you can generally change your name to anything you want, as long as it is not for the purpose of defrauding creditors.

Re: name change

Your name legally is what the divorce says it is.

To change it to anything else, you'd have to file a new name change case in court. Call me if we can help you with that.
