Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia
Child Support/Double Jeopardy
It seems I'm being tried twice for the same crime. :)
My ex-wife and I are legally divorced and have three children between us. A child support order was not established at the time of our divorce, but I have paid child support every month since the divorce. I reside in the state Georgia. She resides in another state and has custody of our three children.
Finally, a child support order was established in court here in Georgia this past Janurary, but last week I received a summons to appear in court AGAIN to establish a child support order. (?????)
The summons was sent to me through Georgia by the state my ex-wife currently resides.
My questions are:
Since there was a child support order established in January and is currently in place through Georgia, can my ex-wife drag me into court again this soon?
How long is the current support order good for in Georgia?
How soon can my ex-wife file for modification of child support in the state of Georgia?
Thank you
