Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Contempt of Court Charge

My friend was arrested on a Contempt charge arising from a divorce decree for non payment of alimony (there are no children involved and they were married less than a year) The supenea for the original hearing was served to a lady his son was staying with for 7 days while they were moving to a new apartment. He didn't show up at that hearing and his ex was awarded $2500/mo alimony for 36 mos by claiming he had stolen a lot of money from her. He wasn't even aware of owing the alimony until they arrested him The Contempt order was signed in 6/06 (the divorce 4/06) They didn't pick him up on the charge until 2/07 apparently waiting for the laws to change in 1/07 and the time allowed for an appeal to expire I've come up with $ for a lawyer, but when they hear it is in Chatooga Co GA and who the lawyer and judge were (whom are very close friends) most are not even willing to take the case and the few who will consider doing so want $10,000 for a retainer! It's the ''good ol' boy'' system at it's worse! The public defender's office says it's a civil matter and GA Legal Aid said that because he was arrested, it's a criminal matter and neither will help! He's been in jail 3 mos now How long can they hold him? What can I do? Any suggestions?

Re: Contempt of Court Charge

You are going to have to keep searching for an attorney. You may need to go outside Chatooga county.
