what is the difference between joint legal custody and joint physical custody?

Good question! "Joint Legal Custody" means that both mom and dad share in the decisions that effect the child -- medical decisions, education decisions, religious upbringing, for example. "Joint Physical Custody" means that the child physical resides with each parent for a certain period of time. For instance, a child may be with one parent on the weekend and the other during the week. Or perhaps a child is with mom during the school year and dad during holidays and summer break.
