What is the difference between temporary custody/ legal guardianship?
I work for Delta Air Lines and wanted to put the young lady I took into my home onto my flight benefits. Both parents of this 17year old are deceised and she was homeless. I was told that I can not become the legal guardian because both parents are deceised. Is this true?
The company I work for does not want to allow me to add this young lady to my flight/med. benefits unless I become her legal guardian, I have currently a verification order from Cobb County that gives me temporary custody, the company says that this is not enough. This young lady lives in my home, goes to school and I am responsible for her..........I dont understand the difference, or is this just a different form of terminology...............?

A possible simple answer: If she's close to age 18, at age 18, Georgia allows for adoption of adults. That would make her your legal child. If you want more information on that, contact my office. (Since a guardianship of a minor would expire at age 18, a guardianship wouldn't help you much anyway).

I understand the company's reluctance to put her on your insurance unless she is your legal dependent. (However, if full guardianship will satisy them, the just push forward for full guardianship.) On the other hand, you can, even now, file for an adoption, if you understand all that that entails. That should easily satisfy them. However, I would strongly advise you to consult with a local attorney about all these issues.
