Dispute of Name Change Request..

My xwife is the Petitioner and I am the Respondent in a Civil Action where she is trying to change my sons last name to her maiden name. I work and live out-of-state. Can I file my response it writing (in absentia) or do I have to be present at the hearing to dispute this?
