Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Divorce and Alimony

Hello, I have been married since 5/10/2005 and I am ready to get a divorce. My husband is very abusive and I wanted to know if I am eligible to alimony til I get on my feet because I want to leave to Florida. I would like to take my furniture that I bought before we were married.

Re: Divorce and Alimony

Your entitlement to alimony will depend on the financial situations of you and your husband. You should consult with a local attorney because there are no hard and fast rules in this area.

Re: Divorce and Alimony

It would be very unusual (although not impossible) to receive alimony after such a short marriage. An attorney would need detailed facts to answer that but it is possible that the cost of seeking it would outweigh the chance of getting it. Again, an attorney would need to interview you to assess that.

Personal property you brought into the marriage is yours and he cannot keep that unless you agree to him doing so.
