Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Divorce and Child Custody

I have been married for almost 11 yrs and have 2 kids, but a husband that has never been of any help in raising these kids. He never spends time with them and always has an excuse not to come to school functions or extracurricular activities. I filed for divorce 2 wks ago and he does not want it. He has been acting like a daddy to my girls now and says that he is fighting me for joint custody where they are with him a full week and me a full week. I do not think that is stable at all for 2 girls to be with a daddy that was never there for them in the past and for him to think he can just take them from the parent that has always done everything for them while he layed on the couch or ran around all night doing who knows what. He makes threats towards me such as turning me in to defacs for having dirty ceiling fans and ridiculous things like that. I do want my kids to see their dad if he is going to be good to them but only every other weekend and maybe on afternoon during the week when he is off. I do not want him taking them to his mother that has never been in their lives so that he can keep doing what he wants to do. Should I worry that a judge would actually grant him the joint custody that he is asking for?

Re: Divorce and Child Custody

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you filed the divorce yourself, you should consult with a local attorney. If an attorney filed for you, he/she should be able to answer your questions.
