Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

divorce and debt

I have been married for 5 months. Right from the beginning of our co-habitation, things were not right. I started playing detective, and to my suprise, my new husband is over 120,000 in debt, which he neglected to mention to me. I have taken great pains over the years to keep an excellent credit rating, and I have no debt. He left his job to move here, and I have been supporting us since we got married. He is still unemployed, no life insurance, 55 years old, and also paying alimony and debts from his previous marriage. I am VERY upset about the position I have been put in, and at present, deciding how to go about a legal separation, and also, how to distance myself from his debt. Am I liable for his debts? And is there a way to undo this marriage asap?

Re: divorce and debt

First, you are not liable for his debts, unless you signed on them. Second, you should consult with a local attorney about beginning proceedings, either for separate maintenance or divorce.

Re: divorce and debt

Georgia does not have legal separations per se. You may want to see a divorce attorney if that is the direction you are headed.

This forum cannot give you "the best advice," because an attorney needs to have an actual discussion with you and examine relevant documents in order to do that. You should begin selecting an attorney without delay.
