Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Not divorced!

26 years ago I married right out of highschool. The marriage lasted 9 mos. Then we divorced. We are both remarried now and he is trying to get citizenship for his wife, which required proof of his divorce from me. It cannot be found. We have searched and searched and can find no record of the divorce. What do we do? How do we proceed? what are the ramifications?

I'm scared to death!

Re: Not divorced!

Have you contacted the clerk of court where your divorce took place? Also, you might check with the GA Dept of Vital Records http://health.state.ga.us/programs/vitalrecords/

Re: Not divorced!

Divorce records are simple to locate. The county where it was done will keep copies back to the beginning of when the county existed. Check with the Clerk of Superior Court. The state also keeps records (contact GA Dept of Vital Records) but the actual decree is with the county. The lawyer who handled it also may have a copy.
