Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

I got into a domestic dispute with my boyfriend and they arrested him for battery. I do not want him to stay in jail because I need his help with the bills and stuff. He is on probation. Will they make him serve a long sentence even if I do not press charges?

Please, please get counseling. You need to find out why you would even consider such a dangerous course of action. People who commit battery almost always get more abusive and not less, and in taking the abuser's side you have already told him that he can abuse you with impunity. The next incident will be worse. You could die. Read those three words closely: YOU COULD DIE.

Money is not worth more than your life. Get as far away from the abuser as you can. And pray that he gets significant jail time.

You CANNOT "press charges" or drop charges. As soon as there was an arrest, it became the state versus him, and you are a witness. To have a battery charge, the police likely also observed things and even without you they could possibly make the case.

If you need help and cannot afford it, call the local battered women's shelter or call 404-688-9436 for help and advice and counseling 24/7. Good luck!
