Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

I am going to file for a divorce & my spouse is saying that he will contest it, does that mean that he will have to retain a lawyer to represent him?

No, although he should.

And regardless, you MUST get a lawyer in such a case unless you want it to go badly.

No one is obligated to hire an attorney. Those who don't usually end up on the bad end of the deal. In Georgia he cannot prevent the divorce from happening. He can, however, contest the issues.
