Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My friend is a 17 year old male. His mother kicked him out about six months ago. He has been living with another family for this time and has been taken well care of. He has not received anything from his family in this time. He is still going to school, and he is now in extracurricular activities that this family has paid for. Can his parents tell him that he has to move back in with them? His options were to move back in or go to ydc.
