Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My husband was granted temporary custody and control of his step son from his prior marriage in Jan 2006. The bio mother is a drug addict and the bio father has abandoned the child. How long is the temporary custody valid? I contacted juvenile court and they said 2 yrs and then custody would revert back to who had him before which would be the bio mom. I have heard conflicting information and would like to know for sure.
