Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Leaving the country Divorce not final

My soon to be ex-husband filed for divorce in Cotober of last year, i signed the paperwork on 3-3-09. I signed the settlement agreement ensuring an uncontested divorce. I

was told by his lawyer that everything was final. I'm originally from Panama and want to go back home very soon. I was told by his lawyer that it was okay that I leave the country though a court date has not yet been set and that it could take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to finalize. My question for you is since my ex was in the military and we agreed on half his pension, do I need legal representation for the court date to insure that I get all of what we had agreed on? Since all the final paperwork has been accepted by the court and we have come to an agreement should I not leave the country? There were several other things in the settlement that I would like to make sure that is taken care of, but since I was told by his lawyer that what we agreed on is what will carry over in court. The reason for me needing to leave the country is because I have no family here and really have no place to stay. I've been told that his lawyer would only have his best interest in heart, but the lawyer made me feel comfortable about all being settled. Please advise

Re: Leaving the country Divorce not final

You've done everything completely wrong. You may or may not have problems as a result, and it may or may not be too late to fix those problems. No one who has not read the paperwork in the case can tell you more than that.

His lawyer represents him and has a duty to act against your interests and for his client, so you should never have talked with him, and should not be doing so now.

You also never should have signed any agreement without having it reviewed by counsel.

At this point you should see a lawyer to determine if anything is wrong, and, if it is, whether or not it is fixable.
