Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Legal age responsibility ends for child

What is the legal age at which I can make my child leave my home, and discontinue support. The child goes to school part time, is in the Marine reserves, but has no desire to work. One parent wants the child to leave the other doesn't. The child is 21, and I want him to become more responsible. Do I legally have to support him until he is out of school by letting him live at my house and supporting him monetarily? I feel like at 18 my responsibility stops, please help.

Thank you for your time,

Sherry

You are correct that your obligation for support stopped at age 18. I would file a dispossessory against him. Go to your local magistrate's office for the forms. One problem that you might encounter is this: he is technically a "tenant at will" which means you might have to give, silly as this may sound, 60 days written notice to vacate before you can file.

Chery. I don't think this is a legal matter. Since he was 18, you have had a right to throw him out. My son is 21. If you want to talk about this a little more, feel free to e-mail to [email protected].
