In addition to what Mr. Field advised. If you legally separate and then later get divorced, you will have to go through the same process you did with the separation and the divorce will probaby cost you the same amount as did the separation (therefore double the cost).

Georgia does not have legal separations. You can file for separate maintenance seeking alimony and/or child support without seeking a divorce. In most cases this doubles the time and legal fees parties incur over just starting with a divorce.

What most people refer to as "legal separation" is, in legal terms, a "Petiton for Separate Maintence". It is very similar to a divorce, except that you are not asking for a divorce. Got you confused? Consult with a local attorney.
