Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia
legally dependant
20 yr. old Son will be going to college, when is he not a legal dependant? He lives at home ,works in family buisiness, but does not collect a paycheck. How can he live at home and not be a dependant? His health and life insurance is in his name, should the car he drives and its insurance also be in his name? Should we not declare him as a dependant on 2006 tax.I've called about 6 differant attorneys in my area so far but they did not practice in this area. Thank you for your time. John

Re: legally dependant
This is not a question for most lawyers. Tax questions should be answered solely by either a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney specialized solely in tax law. Like most attorneys, I don't specialize in tax law. You should spend the money to have a CPA (not something like HR Block but a real CPA) to advise you.
Re: legally dependant
It is difficult to determine why you are asking the question. If you are attempting to make your son independent for the purposes of student financial aid, you will need to contact officials at the Georgia Student Finance Commission to explain what that involves.
