Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

I live in Georgia, but getting married in Tennessee. After I get married I want to change my name by dropping my first name and shifting all my names forward. How would I do that and how long might it take? Wondering because I'm planning to fly for my honeymoon so I want buy my tickets under the right name.

Thank you

If you are leaving for your honeymoon directly after your wedding, I would NOT buy the tickets using your married name. In order for you to change your driver's license, social security card, passport, etc., you will need a valid marriage license. Until you get that marriage license, you will not be able to change these items and even when you do get the marriage license, it takes time administratively to change these things out.

Go ahead and make your tickets using your maiden name and then once you get back from your honeymoon, make all the necessary name changes then. Congrats!

Best of luck.******The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.*******

Congratulations on the wedding!

Unless you want to be blocked from flying under the terrorist watch lists, make sure you buy your ticket to exactly match your driver's license.

After the honeymoon, see a lawyer to file a legal name change. I practice in your county and handle these, and would certainly be glad to discuss this at this time with you (my number is 404-768-3509).

Contrary to Phillip's answer, your marriage license cannot be used to accomplish the particular name change you seek. It will require a superior court order.
