Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

I live in Georgia. My step daughter has my wifes maiden name and has asked for it to be changed to my last name. My daughter is 15 and has called me dad since she was 1.5 years old. Her biological father has never had anything to do with her and has always denied her, and has never payed support. His name is not on the birth certificate. My wife and I was looking to see what needed to be done in the state of Ga to have her name changed. Is it easy for us to do our selves or will it require an attorney? Funds are tight, but we want to make this happen for her. Thank you, Dean

Given how small the legal fees are, and the fact that a misstep may slow the case or complicate it, I'd recommend counsel. The court costs and publication fees for the court run just under $300. Attorneys fees if you shop around may be only a few hundred dollars.
