My mother was asked to keep 2 of her grandchildren until an expected child abuse investigation is done on their mother how long could this take

That is impossible to answer. You did not provide the court, jurisdiction, whether this is a criminal or DFACS investigation. I am assuming DFACS is involved in the case. If DFACS placed the children with your mother, your mother should have the name of the case worker. I suggest staying in touch with him/her.
