what papers would I need to file for custody of a child? The father & I are already divorce. We have joint custody but he is the primary.

You have two choices. You can look at various court sites for forms, most of which are inadequate, and proceed pro se and probably lose, or you can see a lawyer, get advice on how to proceed and follow that advice (in which case he will prepare appropriate paperwork). Bear in mind the case is far more than forms. You will usually have mediation, discovery and hearings.
