Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia
Petition for Modification of child support
My ex-husband has filed the petition to lower the amount he pays in child support. No, I can not under any circumstances afford a lawyer, so please don't tell me to get one. That's why I'm here asking a free question: What do I have to do? Do I have to go to court (I don't want to)? Can I just turn in a copy of my tax return (I have no other proof of income)? Do we have to appear before a judge? Do I have to talk in front of a judge? I guess you get my point.
Thanks for answering.

Re: Petition for Modification of child support
Well, you are going to be acting as your own lawyer, which is your right. However, you will be expected by the court to know legal procedure, the rules of evidence and pleading, etc.
First, you should file an answer to the petition.
No, you don't HAVE to go to court; however, if you don't, the judge won't hear your side of the story.
No, you can't just file a copy of your tax return.
At least consult with a local attorney. Call around. There are many, like me, who don't charge for initial consultations.
