Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Okay to rely on social services agency?

Is it sufficient to rely on my local social services agency to collect back child support or would it be advantageous to retain a private attorney?

O.K. to rely on Social Services?

If the status of the case is such that it will be handled _via_ the Interstate Compact, you will likely have little choice but to leave it in the hands of agency attorneys - it IS very important to be sure you get in the right church / right pew, so an initial consult w/ the agency is Very Appropriate so that you understand the 'jurisdictional status' of the case [when this aspect gets complicated, it is much too murky to try to explain on here .. but issues involved include whether the "foreign order" was registered in the 'home state' * not to mention who's state is now, or was then 'foreign' *&* whether both states are signed up on the same compact].

If the underlying support order was made in New York State, and if the Respondent is _still_ in New York State, you might want to give serious consideration to initiating the court action IN New York State [that is, by-pass the interstate compact machinery] - again, you need to place a true copy of the court orders, etc. in your hands and sit down w/ an agency or other attorney to ascertain the best course of action.

Regards, etc.,
