If one of the spouses is proven to have been unfaithful, how will this effect the outcome of the divorse and custody placement for children?

It may not affect custody of the children at all, unless it can be shown that it was detrimental to the children, e.g., if the children witnessed some lewd behaviour. Consult with a local attorney.
