Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

How does a teenager emanciapte herself from deadbeat parents?

I'm a college teacher who has a financially struggling student. She has no contact and receives no financial support from her parents, yet on financial aid forms she is still considered a dependent. Thus, her parents' incomes are used in calculating her need.

According to the school's financial aid people, she must claim her parents' income until she's is 21 or separated from them for a full two years.

Q: Is there any legal action she can take in order to emancipate herself from these deadbeat parents who are preventing her from getting the financial aid she needs and deserves?

Thanks.

I have no experience in this particular area of the law. I would suggest that you call around in your area and find an attorney who can sit down with you and discuss the issues. Many local bar associations have a list of attorneys who will do free consultations.
