Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

Visitation

What can I do other than hire a lawyer to get my ex husband to follow the visitaion guidelines in the divorce papers? I live 6 hours away. He refuses to let me see him. We have joint legal custody. When I make a trip to see him (which he knows about) he will keep my son from the house and not return till I leave. I went to a football game and saw him for ten minutes. His dad said he had school the next day and wouldn't let me take him to eat. My son does not want trouble and says ''Mom, the only way is to get a lawyer.'' What can I do?

Re: Visitation

Consult with a family counselor. Then consider talking to him about your needs and it being in his and his son's interest that he cooperate with you. If that does not work, then talk to him again in the presence of a witness he respects. Then have somebody he respects talk to him alone.

Consider finding someway to reward him for cooperation and punish him for negligence. Lastly, consider negating any rewards he gets for not cooperating with you.

Save your money so you will have enough for hiring an attorney and document everything with diary and confirm your understandings with him in letters.

Establish a continuing correspondence relationship with your son.

Re: Visitation

Other than hire a lawyer? Well, you can represent yourself but you will be expected to know the law and procedure. It sounds like you have a possible contempt of court action against your ex. If he is blatantly in contempt, most judges will award your attorneys fees.
