funeral expenses

my son passed away 1/8/06 he lived with his mother at the time.while makeing final arraingments we discovered the cold hard truth,money had to paid in advance.there was no insurance i had no cash and there wasn/t enough time tofind other means.his mothers family is well off and paid the debt.i have signed nothing with these people.do they have a case?
