can a person sue you for definition of character by other people saying you said something about them if you know you know they never heard you say it themselve

First of all there is no such thing as definition of character. Maybe you meant slander, the oral form of defamation?

Second, how would you expect lawyers to figure out what you said to whom, and the truth of it, or lack thereof, from a post where you don't bother to tell us what was said, why you got sued, etc.?

Since you apparently have been sued you need a lawyer for handles such matters. Call one.
