You don't "press charges" for slander like a criminal case. You file a lawsuit and allege the elements of a slander case, as well as your damages. Based on your question, yes, you need a lawyer to explain these things to you to see if you have any case at all that is worthwhile to tie up lawyers and the court.

Scott is correct regarding the proper civil terminology. Additionally, you should, at the minimum, consult with an attorney about the matter. Remember, defamation actions are extremely difficult to win.
