Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Georgia

I have a relative who is a lawyer, lets call him Mr.X . I am network specialist for a large company and also have my own small company on the side. Last year, unknowingly, I purchased some products from an individual that were stolen. I was contacted by a detective and asked to return the products. Since I was concerned, I contacted Mr.X for advice. After giving me some legal advice over the phone, He suggested that I contact another lawyer, friend of his, and pay him to take the case. I did do that and we returned the products. I was not charged with any wrongdoing. Detectives believed that my worries were unnecessary and I was over reacting.

After a year from this event, I heard some roomer among my family members that I was involved in theft and reselling of stolen products and that is how I have become wealthy. It is clear that Mr.X had talked about our discussion with family members.

Hearing those false remarks about me can really affect me in our community and might heart my business. Is there any chance that I can do anything legally about the fact that Mr.X has discussed details of our conversation with others? Are there any laws that perhaps prohibit him from talking about our private conversation?

He may have violated the attorney-client privilege by discussing the matter with family members. You can contact the bar to file a grievance against him and bring a claim against him for disclosure of private facts and slander. However, you must have sufficient proof by way of family members who are willing to testify that he discussed his representation with the members and falsely accused you of theft. These claims are very difficult to win.

You'll need to show there was an attorney/client relationship first, and only then that he violated it. Perhaps more importantly, how will your family relationships be harmed by going after him and making it all a public issue? Sometimes a phone call can clear it up.
