You'll want to apply for an adjustment of status which will give you a temporary work permit within 3-4 months of filing.

If your husband is going to file the petition and you are filing for your adjustment of status at the same time, you can apply for your work authorization also. Do not work if you are an F-1 prior to that work authorization or there will be difficulties. Second, I suggest you get an attorney to help file the documents -- remember, these are legal proceedings with the government; one mistake is all it takes to be denied.
