Legal Question in Insurance Law in Georgia

I'm getting calls harassing me for payment. Got in an accident in Dec, during a few days my insurance lapsed but got reinstated. It was rainy and at night, another 4 cars were in an accident with police blocking traffic and was distracting. Next thing I know car in front of me slams on brakes and I swerved to left to avoid collision but ended up hitting corner rear driver side which caused dents in their car. Some guy called me saying it was a company car and asking for payment and had court papers. I don't feel it was all my fault. I tried to get my brakes serviced and told they were fine only to find out afterwards that was a lie and had to get my brakes flushed. I am so broke after replacing my headlight, brake and other car repair. Now the other party is demanding I pay. What should I do? I'm in such a rut and I cant afford anything. Any suggestions?

Going without insurance is a crime, so remember that you still can be charged, and you can lose your license that way. You also can lose your license (for life, absent payment or bankruptcy) if you fail to pay damages and the other party pursues that with the state through appropriate steps. Having said all that, you should not deal with phone calls and need to see a lawyer. That is necessary. If you are low on funds, you may need to go up and down your street and clean gutters and mow yards, borrow funds, or ask family to help, but this is not going away, and saying "I can't" is not the answer.
