if i lose my car keys and it gets stolen will the insurance company not pay me off claiming i was at fault for losing my keys?

They're likely to investigate whether you lied and committed fraud and the car really wasn't stolen. Assuming the evidence shows you told the truth, you probably will see the claim paid properly. Expect your insurance rates to go up after the claim is paid (or even to see the policy cancelled).
