Freely distributing Altered Automotive intelectual property

An automotive company creates an electronic file to be placed on your cars computer, which will inturn increase your performance. If you change that file and freely distrubute it. Is there any legal action which said company can take.

Most likely yes, but I would need to know more of the facts before I could give you a complete answer. If the file is copyrighted protected or patented, than there is a strong chance of legal recourse.
