Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Georgia

Are pets considered personal property in GA?

while grooming a customers dog at my salon the dog jumped from the drying area to the floor and aparently cracked its jaw bone. The owners are now suing me in small claims court for the medical bills which are over 3,000 dollars. Since this was an accident i dont think i am responsible for more than the value of the dog as personal property which is minimal. I have tried to research other court cases similar to mine in georgia but do not know where to find this information. Can you help? Thanks.

Re: Are pets considered personal property in GA?

While pets are considered mere property in the eyes of the law, I doubt that a magistrate would expect a dog owner to replace the pet instead of paying for its medical bills. Whether you will be responsible for the damages depends on the facts of the situation and the agreement between the parties, if any. But to answer your questions, pets are personal property, but that would not necessarily preclude an obligation to pay the vet bills.
