Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

defamation

I was recently terminated because an employee spread a rumor that I was on the georgia sexual offender registration list. Upper management was notified and asked the employee to produce the website they saw my name on. I can assure you that I am not on that list. Upper management failed to respond to me concerning this issue. The employee is still employed there and upper management will not speak about it to me. What are my rights and do I have a legal case to stop this and help clear my name. Since this issue has surfaced, I am having a hard time finding employement. Thank you.

A claim for defamation may exist when a person spreads false rumors about criminal activity by another person. That suit, if available, is against the person making the statements, not the people to whom they were made. Employment in GA is "at will," which means an employee can terminate employment for any or no reason (with certain exceptions not mentioned here, or where there is a contract for a certain term). See a local lawyer who has handled these type of cases.
