I am an employer in the state of Georgia. I had an associate ask me for time off which I told her I could not approve. Today she told me she was taking the trip we had discussed. Can she be terminated for job abandonment?

Absent an employment agreement to the contrary, all employees in Georgia are "at-will," meaning they can be terminated at any time, for any reason or no reason at all, unless the termination violates one of the federal anti-discrimination laws or some other employee rights law. Generally, absent a medical reason, an employer in Georgia is free to terminate an at-will employee for absenteeism or failing to show up for his/her scheduled shift.
