Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

how can i be fired for this?

to start there was an arguement between two co workersi was in and out of the area before and after the arguement.the employer took statements of all who were around i did not hear all of what happened between the two.so i wrote that in my statement at the end of the day i was suspended, and told to report back at 10am the next morning at that time i was fired for making a false statement. i was told that the other statements said i was in that area and there was no way i couldn't have heard everything that was said. i was until that point employed for 18 years at this same cabinet assembly plant never a write up or anything. is this a reason for termination. i can't be made to say i heard something that i did not.

Assuming you have no contract or employee handbook that requires "cause" (or provides other rights), and the reason for termiation is not race, gender, or other protect classes, then yes, they can fire you for any reason or no reason in GA. Make sure you gather all relevant documents and write down some notes on the incident in case you get into a dispute over unemployment payments. Good luck.
