Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia
Hiring practices of AT&T
My son interviewed for a job with AT&T in April. In Sept. he was called for a second interview. A few days later he recieved a packet in the mail that contained a letter instructing him to have a drug test done within 2 days. Now, my son is stupid, I'll admit that. He cheated on the test by supplying another's urine instead of his own so that they wouldn't know that he smoked marijuana. Another week or so went by and he received a letter telling him that he had been hired and to report to work on Oct. 28. He gave a two week notice at his job quit. When he showed up at AT&T on the specified date with his letter, he was told to find a computer with his name on it - there was not one. He at that point was told to go home and call a certain number, which he did, and found that the reason he couldn't start to work was because he falsified the drug test. His position with the company he was working for has been filled so now, he is without a job. Is it legal for AT&T to tell him he had a job with them and allow him to quit his old job when they knew that the
y would not be hiring him?

Re: Hiring practices of AT&T
Is this a serious question? Virtually everyone takes a risk when quitting an old job, since without a contract the new job is usually "at will" and the person can be terminated one or before the first day. It is certainly the case that a person who is an illegal drug user and dishonest to boot does not somehow get more rights than other people. The place to point the finger is the mirror (if not two of them).
