Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

husband was a fire marshal that was demoted to fire fighter. there was not any counseling, write-ups. He only got an e-mail from HR to meet them with chief and then and there they demoted my husband, who by the way served 21 yeaers with exellent evaluations every single year employed.. I am horrified by this.. he had appeal hearing... comment by our lawyer was that the threw him under the bus. The entire family of ours have had severe emotional ditress.. is there something we can do as in being awarded punitive damages?
