Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia
Job Offer - Verbal Agreement
I have been a graphic designer at a company in Alpharetta for 7 months. I was verbally offered a graphic design position at a company in Atlanta on May 24. I accepted the offer, and we discussed everything from my duties to salary and benefits, etc. They wanted me to start on June 5 (in 12 days) - they were very eager for me to start and didn't even want to give me a full 2 weeks to finish up my current job. So I felt the need to rush everything, and I went ahead and put in my 2 weeks notice the following day at my current employer. Even though they had not yet sent the written contract. I contacted them later on in the day that they offered me the postion and the following day - they said both times that they were very busy and it was on it's way. Here it is 2 weeks later (I was supposed to start the job yesterday) but they never sent the contract. Now they are trying to retract the job offer saying that they have lost an important client, so they no longer need a full-time graphic designer. I have already finished up the 2 weeks at my other job (my last day was yesterday) so now I have no job! Is there anything I can do? Any sort of severance package that I could possibly get?

Re: Job Offer - Verbal Agreement
As you make clear, you had no contract for the new job and it was your decision to quit the old job. That probably ends the inquiry. However, even if you had a contract with the new company, unless it was for a stated term(such as two years) - which I assume would be very unusual in that industry - they could have still let you go at any time if they lost a big client.
If there is more to the story, such as firm negotiations and express agreements for a set term, salary, etc., you may want to repost.
