Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

laid off without end date

I was laid off from my job on January

30th which was a friday. I didn't

receive a letter from the company

until the following Tuesday, but it did

not specify an end date or exact

package. It is now Feb. 24th and I

still do not have an end date or a

package. I am a mother of 2 and

bread winner for my family as well as

the healthcare holder. I have no

way of planning how to take care of

my family because I need my

severance, but don't know when

things will end. The other people

around me are receiving their

packages the day before they are

asked to leave. Is this legal for the

company to string me along until

they feel they don't need me any

longer and then to give me a package

with end date a day before the end

date is?

Re: laid off without end date

Your post is too vague for an answer. You refer to a "package," but don't define what that is. You do not refer to any contracts, company policies, etc., which would give you a right to severance or benefits. There is no general right to severance, so we need to know more facts as to what, if anything, you are entitled to. You mention a "letter" but do not tell us what it says. In addition, it would be helpful to know the size of the company and, generally, about how many people are being laid off right now (without naming the company). You might want to repost with more facts, or contact an employment lawyer.
