can a company engage in making their employess work overtime if the employee does not want to or if it conflicts with his/her personal life?

An employer can generally set whatever hours it wants. You, of course, have the choice of not working there.

The true question is whether they can terminate the employee and hire someone who can work their preferred schedule. The answer is usually yes, they can hire and fire based on their needs. They need to follow laws and regulations concerning overtime pay, and such things, but that goes beyond your question and the facts stated.
