Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

No more, but paid less

I'm in a situation at work, where I found a co-workers pay stub and it bother me because their pay is greater than mine. It's not only that, but #1)I've been employed a few months longer and #2)I have to assist this employee with their work everyday and I mean it literally--like schooling a child. At my job, we have different grade levels and I thought that the grade determined the pay and this is not so. My questions: Is this okay? If not, what should I do?

Re: No more, but paid less

You would need to tell me a lot more to be able to say. The only way you would have any recourse here is if the employer is treating you differently due to your race, color, creed, religion, gender, age (against one over 40), disability or family leave status, or is violating any employment contract you have. Otherwise, employers in Georgia are pretty much allowed to treat different employees differently. You have not provided enough information for me to determine if you potentially have some kind of case here. If you wish, please send me a more detailed e-mail, including:

Your annual pay versus the other employee's

The type of employer (govt, private?)

Any differences between you and the other worker relating to the protected categories I've outlined above.

More detailed specifics on the kind of differing treatment you are getting, when it started, and how long it is going on.

Whether you have any kind of employment contract.

What your company's or agencies policy manual says about equal treatment, if anything.

You can forward it to me at [email protected]
