If you are on salary can an employer avoid paying you for a day you missed due to illness?

This will depend upon the employer's sick leave policy. Although there is no law requiring an employer to pay you for time off due to illness, many employers have policies permitting a certain allotment of "paid time off" for vacation, sick and personal days. Check whether your employer has such a policy and, if so, whether you have any earned sick days available to you.
