Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

Salary question

My gf works at a private school in GA. Her contract states that she is supposed to make 40,000 a year. At first they told her to start on August 1st, but then they told her to start on August 7th. If she had started on August 1st they would have owed her extra because summer school teachers earn extra pay, so she would have been paid more than 40k in this case. They did not want to pay her this extra money, so they had here start one week later. However, now they are telling her they will only pay her about 39k because she did not work the week of August 1st even though they told her to start on the 7th and even though she is on a salary. She is not a hourly-wage earner. She did what she was told to do and followed her contract which shows her salary for the year. The teacher contracts at the school states that the date of the yearly contract is from June 1st-the following end of May. Summer work is optional and pays extra. What can she do about this besides switching to a more professional school?

Thanks

Re: Salary question

You refer to a contract, but say nothing about what the contract provides as far as start dates, whether she was a new hire, etc. That, and likely other provisions, would be relevant in answering the question.
