Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

searching personal effects

Can an employer randomly search through an employee's personal effects? We have a new manager and she has told us in our last meeting that she can and will go through our purses, coats and lunchbags whenever she feels like it. There have been no issues at work to warrant such a thing.

Re: searching personal effects

The employees have every right to refuse to allow such searches and for her to try to force them on you would be unlawful, even criminal. The flip side is, the company has every right to fire you and the others for refusing to comply (unless there is an employment contract involved). There is strength in numbers. If all refuse, she might not be able to afford to fire everybody.
