Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

severance/stay on bonus

my company had me sign a document for me to stay on until March 28 to assist with the plant closure. The first paragraph states the ''desire to retain the services of the employee through a futre date...''

But, 2 paragraphs down they state the ''employer will pay six weeks of severance.......''

The Dept of Labor has stated I cannot file for unemployment until my six weeks are up.

What can I do to get unemployment ? I was told that this was a ''stay on bonus''

Re: severance/stay on bonus

Unemployment payments are to make up for lost income. You have no lost income for the six weeks, regardless of the label (though your post clearly indicates it is six weeks severance), and getting severance and unemployent benefits for the same period is not the purpose of the program.
