Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

termination threatend over refusal to sign retention bonus extension

I signed an agreement earlier this year with my employer to receive a retention bonus..at the end of the year or when a particular client left, whichever came first. The client has decided to stay on with the company until the middle of next year. My employer now wants me to sign an extension on the retention bonus agreement until then. I've refused so far. They say if I don't, I'll receive my bonus at the end of this year as originally agreed, then I will be terminated. Advice please? Thanks!

Most employment is "at will," and you can be fired for any or no reason unless you have a contract stating otherwise(with very few exceptions not raised in your post). Disagreements or an unwillingness to cooperate with the employer (even if unreasonable to you) is certainly a common reason. You only mention one term of an agreement and it appears the employer is willing to honor it. While more facts might be relevant, it looks like you and the employer both have business decisions to make.
